Pathétique means to move someone emotionally - to evoke sadness, to evoke pity. Pathétique was composed by Tito Abeleda for string orchestra and string sextet. Tito wrote this original poignant piece as a means to catharsis for processing sadness, reflection, and deep contemplation. Pathétique begins with an expressive violin solo, which sets the melodic motif and tone for the entire piece. Pathétique slowly builds, adding each string part as its own contrapuntal layer, which creates ever-growing, rich, lush harmonies that seek to climb to the pinnacle of a musical climax, resonating the fullness of emotional release. This past week I had been contemplating the utter desperation that seems to have surrounded us in living our day to day life from politics to Covid-19 and pervading social injustice. To process these emotions and to achieve some type of catharsis, I started to write music that would convey this desperation that fuels our actions. Everything seems to be a matter of life and death. To uplift our spirits I wrote music that reflected our actions and emotions but also to give us strength and hope so that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. This too shall pass. We can get through this together.

I share with you now my new creation entitled Desperate created to capture our feelings and energy of these times as well as a to provide a healthy musical dose of strength and hope with the power of resilience to see a better tomorrow.

This past month I took the time to explore new musical terrain in the realm of emotional ambient soundscapes. In the pursuit of expanding my horizons I wrote and produced Angst, Foreboding, Oblivion, and Glimmer of Hope, each musical conveying the essence of their individual titles. I combined both acoustic and electronic instrumentation with an emphasis in creating music that would provide an emotional ambient musical atmosphere for expressing their respective title’s emotions, suitable for projects in need of conveying such emotions in an ambient manner.

I have entitled this new collection Dark Dreams. At this time, I have only released them in music libraries of Songtradr and Pond5 available for licensing.

An Album for the Times: A Tribute to Those Gone Too Soon

Modern Classical, Cinematic Album L’ Heure de la Mort

During this pandemic, no one has been immune to the loss of loved ones. The winds of emotions during this pandemic have been nothing less than turbulent. Because emotions play such a significant part of how Tito processes life, his creativity follows suit. So, he writes music that helps him process all these feelings. The result was the creation of this upcoming album L’ Heure de la Mort. L' Heure de la Mort pays tribute to those taken away from us - to those gone too soon. May they rest in peace as they are blessed in the eyes of God. L' Heure de la Mort means the Hour of Death. Although that moment is different for everyone, death's inevitability is the same for all. This album expresses all the emotions that many have been feeling during this pandemic. There were some days of utter sadness, other days of self-empowerment. Yet there were other days where the desire was just to escape to a dream world free of this world's dysfunction. Other days the great acts of human kindness and courage were a source of inspiration. It is an eclectic album that is dark, memorable, soothing, nostalgic, sentimental, and poignant while also resonating the resilience of the human spirit. Tito hopes that this album will also help others process the many emotions that everyone has been feeling these past few months.

Descensus ad Infero is Latin for Descent into Hell. As such this is a powerful passionate piece with much boldness, dissonance, and angst. There is a driving pulse that is vehement and at times unpleasant and even frenetic because one's descent into the abyss has been adjudged for a life lived accordingly. Piano 1 and Piano 2 trade off on motifs and dynamic changes. Note the melodic motifs that warrant greater emphasis throughout the piece. This piece is rather accessible for the advanced intermediate student. This score would also work well as music for thriller, horror, and/or suspense films.

Gazing upon this picture, I began to daydream and travel to distant lands in the Middle East, then to Mongolia, and beyond to the Far East. I musically wanted to convey what this picture was inspiring within me. At the end, I so aptly entitled this new piece Mongolian Empress Calls.

In the style of the opera singer Uyanga Bold, I wrote for two female voices with a lush string orchestra music bed accompanying the exotic voices. The song uniquely captures the ethnic flavors of the East, Middle East, Mongolia, Bulgaria, and Serbia in a dreamy, alluring, yet seductively captivating manner perfect for cinematic projects seeking to transport audiences to distant lands of the Far East. This worldly song can easily emote that which is mysterious, sensual, exotic, as well as dark, ancient, distant, and foreboding depending on the context for which it is used.

After I finished completing Mongolian Empress Calls, I still wanted to create more music with a middle eastern flavor. Contrary to my usual proclivity for sad emotional music, I was in the mood to march to battle. It was time to start composing some war music, music for the march to battle.

I entitled this new piece Holy Land Wars so that it would have a broad enough reach while also conveying the region of the world and stylistic timbre a listener could expect to hear. The song capture the aggressive, determined, vehement preparation of battle while also capturing musical flavors of the Middle East in the ethnic operatic style of Uyanga Bold chanting and motivating the soldiers to battle. Listeners will notice the heavy use of percussion especially the timpani and Chinese tom-toms. A female choir supports the female soloist and as the song climaxes, a male choir is added to take the song to its cathartic end.

This song, Dying Breath, is a tribute and pays homage to that special moment when a loved one passes onward to the hereafter. This song is while sad is contemplative, meditative, reflective and loving. There is an undertone of sadness yet its build in processional style is indicative of courage to overcome adversity, to face challenges, and to honor those who have been taken away from us.

This cinematic song like its orchestral parent builds dramatically with each piano layer added throughout the song's journey for a cinematic climactic ending. The pianos provide both music and percussive rhythms throughout the song. Care must be taken in bringing out the melodic motifs while the thunderous bed layers remain supportive to each melodic motif.

 Island unto Myself has a sad tranquil, contemplative ambiance as if one were alone on a island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The flutes and add clarinet add a very dreamy quality to the music, while the cello echoes sadness and loneliness. The level of difficulty would be early intermediate.

The song allows the listener to contemplate memories and embrace loss with a sense of peace and hope. The Violin soloist with sweeping mournful strings is especially emotionally moving. This movement envisions climbing from dark and reaching towards the light, from the pit of despair, grief, depression and gathering one's strength to reclaiming one's life once again, to join the ranks of the living and re-embracing oneself. There is resolution - Ideal as closing or ending.

F. Gruber's Silent Night, Holy Night (for Full Orchestra) Arranged by Tito Abeleda (1964 - ). Digital Download = 70 pages.

To understand why I composed this arrangement of Silent Night, Holy Night in the way that I did, close your eyes and imagine taking a holy journey or pilgrimage to visit the Holy Nativity. I musically convey what I imagined it would have been like to make this long journey like the Three Wise Kings and others did to follow the Star of Bethlehem to see the Blessed Child that prophets have foretold. As each person begins the journey, you will hear the distinctly grave motif indicative of the quest that was before them. The brass gloriously herald one's approach to the Holy Nativity coupled with the commencement of the Silent Night, Holy Night carol theme upon one's arrival.

The music Silent Night, Holy Night was originally composed in 1818 by Franz X. Gruber. The original lyrics were were written in German by James Mohr also in 1818. This Christmas Classic was translated to English in 1859 by John Young. I had been pondering about my piano piece Missing You. I wanted all the notes to resonate and soar in a way I couldn't initially figure out until a eureka moment popped in my head - the organ. I added organ pedals that create the perfect music canvas foundation while the moving melody and harmonies weave in and out of each other. The song takes a whole new meaning that which is more befitting of the cathedral pipe organ's emotive grandeur. In essence it sounded like a completely different song than its piano counterpart. So, I named this organ piece Mysterium Tenebris meaning, Dark Mystery in Latin. The song conveys just that, a sense of dark mystery with the organ's timbre resonating a Gothic musical flavor to the piece.

I remember when I first started to learn how to play piano that I wanted to play as much music as possible that was available no matter what level I was playing.  So, in the beginning, I was always in search of easy piano solos that I could learn.  During Christmas I really wanted to be able to play Christmas songs.  Here is a collection of easy piano solos for those eager aspiring piano students who want to play Christmas carols as piano solos.  Although they are easy piano solos, I tried to make them interesting, endearing, and engaging to highlight the young pianist's skills as well as cultivate enthusiasm with the young pianist's desire to keep learning more piano.
